John and Sharna Coors
Founders of Community Uplift Ministries and Children of Hope
John and his wife, Sharna, are parents of 10 children—six of whom are adopted. In 2001, John wanted to find out more about his African child’s roots, so he flew to Nairobi, Kenya. During the flight, he woke up and stared out of the window as the plane flew over the Sahara Desert into sub-Saharan Africa. John says he looked down and knew that there were millions of people living below, but there were no lights. (One-third of the world has no access to electricity.) John says he felt God invited him to join Him in doing something about it. A plan came to mind—which is now Axxess Energy, a cooking and lighting solution.
John, who is chairman, president and CEO of CoorsTek Inc., still plays an active role in Axxess Energy (acting as president and founder), frequently traveling to Africa to launch new aspects of the company, to meet with African leaders and officials and to explore new expansion opportunities.
Sharna, who has a special love for children and adoption, established Children of Hope to more directly minister to the children in Africa. She is the acting Executive Director of Community Uplift and Children of Hope.
